Who Is The Observer?

If you have been following J.J. Abrams’ new sci-fi/drama Fringe you might be spending an inordinate amount of time wondering who the Observe really is.

Since he was first introduced in last week’s episode, as the strange man with a taste for spicy food, a black suit & fedora, and coincidentally seems to be showing up at each new even related to “the Pattern” he has gained the interest of viewers, and garnered much speculation as to who or what he really is.

Since it is still very early and he has made very few appearances so far I have yet to have any formal opinions, but if I had to guess I might say that he will be revealed to be an extraterrestrial. I think this would explain his poor sense of taste (he refers to the fact that he wouldn’t be able to taste much when Walter offers him a sip of his root beer float, and would explain why he needs to add so much pepper and jalapenos to his meal). Another piece of forshadowing that I believe points to the observer being of alien origin is when Peter (Joshua Jackson) jokes about the cylander being alien technology and Walter suddenly becomes quite serious and insists that “nobody said anything about aliens”.  This statement seems too obvious to be ignored, there is no way that the writers just thought it was a good line, there was most definately some thought and suggestion behind it.

But that is just my theory, I have also heard some people speculate that the observer is a cyborg. This could also explain his lack of taste, but I don’t believe it accounts for some of the other evidence. But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

If you have a theory about the Observer I would love to hear from you.
