Mac OS X Tip of the Day

If you’re like me you suck at creating new passwords, which is why I’ve now come to rely on password generators. There are several websites and apps that will create strong random passwords for you, but if you don’t want to install an app just for password creation open up a Terminal window
(go to Applications > Utilities > Terminal)
and type

openssl rand -base64 6

then hit enter. The Terminal will use this command to create a completely random 8 digit password for you.

PS. If you have any cool Terminal commands to share with me please do, I always learning new uses for it.

  1. 1Password isn’t free, but it generates strong passwords of any length with (or without) letters, digits, & symbols. And it securely keeps track of all your passwords. And it integrates with most browsers and will auto-fill login/password boxes. And you can set it up to auto-fill name/address/credit card info for ecommerce sites. Much better than having a file hidden somewhere with all your passwords. Or a post-it note.

  2. Cool, I’ve heard of 1Password but haven’t tried it. Thanks for the comment Doug

  3. You can try it for free.
I sound like I work for the company, but I don’t – just a satisfied user.
