Stephen Hawking wants humanity to “boldly go where no one has gone before”.

Mars ColonySpeaking at a lecture celebrating 50 years of NASA renowned physicist Stephen Hawking, author of A Brief History of Time, and The Universe in a Nutshell, urged humanity to push forward into space. He suggested setting up a permanent colony on the moon to act as a jump of point for further missions, such as those to Mars. He also said Mars would be the next logical step given it’s vast resources of frozen water.

His ideas are somewhat of a controversy in the science community as some people believe that it is far too expensive to set up human colonies and that robot missions are much cheaper. However Hawkings argues that the world has the money and resources to accomplish this goal and still have plenty left over to deal with issues here on Earth.

Check out the article at New Scientist Space.

What do you think, should humans attempt to colonize space? Does our future depend on our race spreading itself out across the solar system? Should we be spending the money on NASA or is that money better spent on something else?
